Gabba to be Demolished After 2032 Olympic Games

The Gabba, a historic cricket stadium in Australia, is set to be demolished following the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. The Queensland government has unveiled plans to replace the venue with a modern, purpose-built stadium in Victoria Park, capable of holding 63,000 spectators.

Key Details:

  • The Gabba, known as the "Gabbatoir," has hosted 67 men's Test matches and 2 women's Test matches since 1931.
  • Australia remained unbeaten in Test cricket at the Gabba from 1988 to 2021.
  • The stadium will host the second Ashes Test later this year before Cricket Australia reviews its venue allocation for future matches.

New Stadium Plans:

  • The new stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2032 Olympics.
  • Post-Olympics, it will become a hub for international cricket events, including Ashes Series, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and domestic leagues like the BBL and WBBL.

Quotes:

Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson stated:
"The Gabba has been a wonderful venue for cricket, but the challenges it faces are well documented. The new stadium offers an opportunity to attract world-class cricket events and create unforgettable experiences for fans."

The Gabba may still host the cricket gold medal match at the 2032 Olympics, depending on final arrangements.
