Vignesh Puthur Steals the Show in IPL Debut
Mumbai Indians' scouting system has done it again, unearthing a gem in 24-year-old Vignesh Puthur from the Kerala Cricket League. The left-arm wristspinner made a stunning IPL debut, claiming 3 wickets for 32 runs against Chennai Super Kings.
A Poignant Moment
Puthur's debut was marked by a heartwarming moment when he met MS Dhoni, a player with 391 T20 games and nearly 20 years of experience. The exchange ended with Dhoni giving Puthur a few appreciative pats on the shoulder.
A Classical Spin Bowler
Puthur's classical spin bowling was a revelation, with his wickets including CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, spin crusher Shivam Dube, and India World Cupper Deepak Hooda. Each of these players tried to impose themselves on Puthur, but his deception and the slowness of the surface combined to undo their intent.
A Big Stage Debut
Puthur's debut was a big stage affair, with MI's stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav holding back one of the youngster's overs for the death as the game funnelled to a close finish. How was a player with no senior T20 experience under his belt readied for such a big stage?
The MI Scouting System
According to MI's bowling coach Shane Mhambrey, the scouting system at MI is all about seeing the potential in a player rather than looking at their past experience. "We saw the potential in him rather than looking into how much cricket he has played in the past," Mhambrey said.
A Lengthy Bowling Stint
Puthur had a lengthy bowling stint in the MI nets in the build-up to the game, which caught the eye of even the India stalwarts. "I think when Rohit, Surya, and Tilak… all these guys batted against him, they felt it wasn't that easy," Mhambrey said.
A Plan to Ensure Success
The MI think-tank carefully mapped out a plan to ensure Puthur wasn't caught cold under the glare of the big stage. After being spotted in the Kerala Cricket League, Puthur was invited for trials ahead of the IPL mega auction. He then played three games for the Reliance team at the DY Patil T20 tournament before joining MI's pre-season camp.
A Conversation with Heroes
According to Mhambrey, the need of the hour for Puthur's growth as a player is more about the conversations he has with his teammates. "Not purely on the skill work so much really. I think that he is pretty much sorted out there I felt. But more about the conversations that he had. An opportunity with MJ or Kieron Pollard. Or the batters, especially Surya or Rohit."
A Dream Come True
For Puthur, it was the first step on a journey that began in the margins and now plays out on centre stage. Even in defeat, for MI it was a small payoff on a long drawn-out investment, the kind of debut that vindicates their process once more.
