Phil Simmons hopes for improved PowerPlay performance by Bangladesh
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has emphasized the need for improved performance in the PowerPlay as they prepare to face New Zealand in a crucial match at Rawalpindi on February 24. Bangladesh lost their opening game against India, while New Zealand won their first match against Pakistan.
In the PowerPlay, Bangladesh scored 39 runs for the loss of five wickets, while India posted 69 runs without losing any wicket. Simmons acknowledged this as a problematic area and stated that they need to improve in both batting and bowling during the first ten overs.
Simmons expressed confidence in Bangladesh's ability to score 300 runs, as they have done so in their last five matches. However, he emphasized that they need to start well to reach that target. He also mentioned that the upcoming match is not about records but about the present moment, and they are focusing on playing well tomorrow.
Simmons also addressed Mahmudullah's injury, stating that they will assess his fitness following a practice session. He added that they are considering various options, including changing their pace attack, but their first priority is to determine Mahmudullah's availability.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials are confident that Mahmudullah will return for the second game, and he was seen batting in the net without any trouble. Simmons stated that they will conduct a fitness test today to determine Mahmudullah's availability for selection.
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner refused to take Bangladesh lightly, stating that they are capable of upsetting any team on their day. Santner also praised Bangladesh's balance, labelling them a 'very good team' with resources to cover all phases of the game. He also mentioned that Bangladesh have some destructive batters who could relish the flat track of Rawalpindi.
