Gill ton, Shami five-fer give India a winning start
- Mohammed Shami takes 5-wicket haul, Shubman Gill scores unbeaten century
- Bangladesh put up a fight with a century from Towhid Hridoy
- India recovers from a slight stutter, chases down 229
Bangladesh started poorly, losing 2 wickets in the first 2 overs. Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana were the wicket-takers. Axar Patel then dismissed Tanzim Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in successive deliveries. Bangladesh was reduced to 35/5.
Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy stabilized the innings with a 154-run partnership. Hridoy scored his maiden ODI century. Shami broke the partnership by dismissing Jaker. Rishad Hossain's brief cameo took Bangladesh past 200. However, Hridoy lost steam due to cramps and was dismissed, with Shami completing his five-fer.
Defending 228, Bangladesh struggled as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill attacked in the PowerPlay. Gill hit a six off Tanzim Hasan. Rohit raced to 37, scoring most of his runs against Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh introduced spin, slowing down the scoring rate. Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed. Axar, promoted due to spin, was also dismissed. KL Rahul, however, remained patient and scored 41*.
Bangladesh dropped Rahul when India still needed 63. Rahul made it count, scoring a six against Rishad Hossain. Gill completed his slowest ODI hundred, his most significant one until now. India won by 6 wickets.
