Sunil Gavaskar Pays Tribute to Milind Rege
Sunil Gavaskar shares a heartfelt tribute to his friend and former Mumbai captain Milind Rege.
A Lasting Bond
Sunil Gavaskar knew that Milind Rege's time was running out. He met him in the hospital on February 18, before leaving for Dubai. Rege, despite his frailty, insisted on shaking hands, as if he knew it would be their last meeting. Gavaskar recalls, "He was like my elder brother. We grew up together, went to the same school and college, and played tennis ball cricket in the compound."
A Cricketing Legacy
Milind Rege was a talented cricketer who played for Mumbai and India. He took 126 wickets at an average of 29.23 and scored 1532 runs at an average of 23.56. Rege's bigger contribution to Mumbai cricket came as a selector and administrator. He served as an advisor with the Mumbai Cricket Association at the time of his demise.
A Tribute from Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to Milind Rege on Twitter, saying, "He was a true Mumbai cricketer with immense contributions to the city's cricket. He and other CCI members saw potential in me and asked me to play for CCI, which, as I look back now, was a landmark moment in my career."
A Minute's Silence
In Rege's memory, Mumbai and Vidarbha players observed a minute's silence ahead of the third day's play in their ongoing Ranji Trophy clash. Mumbai players took the field in Nagpur on Wednesday wearing a black armband.
