Breetzke's Magical Mayhem in Vain

Matthew Breetzke made the highest score by a debutant among 3,037 men who have played ODIs, breaking a record that stood for 13 days short of 48 years. He scored 150 off 148 balls with 11 fours and five sixes.

Devon Conway and Kane Williamson scored 97 and 133 not out, sharing 187 off 155, as New Zealand won by six wickets with eight balls to spare.

Breetzke's innings was marked by powerful shots, including a vicious cut for four and a drive through the covers for another boundary. He launched his last 50 off 20 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.

The South African team's loss marked the first time they have lost five consecutive ODIs since 2004. The defeat also highlighted the challenges of managing a team with a strong focus on the T20 format, as many players are unavailable due to franchise commitments.

Breetzke's performance was a highlight of the match, but ultimately in vain as the team fell short of victory.
