India seal series after Rohit's blistering ton
Rohit Sharma's 119 off 90 balls, including 12 fours and 5 sixes, led India to a series-clinching four-wicket win in the second ODI against England in Cuttack. Chasing 305, India's openers Rohit and Shubman Gill (60 off 52) put on a 136-run stand. Shreyas Iyer (44) and Axar Patel (41*) also contributed to the chase.
England's total of 304 seemed tricky at the halfway mark, but batting under lights on the black-soil surface was relatively easier. Rohit got off to a quick start with a couple of sixes, and Gill supported him with exquisite strokes. The openers scored 77 runs in the first ten overs, setting the tone for the chase.
Jamie Overton provided the breakthrough by dismissing Gill with a scorching yorker. Virat Kohli struggled against Adil Rashid's leggies and was dismissed, bringing Shreyas Iyer to the crease. Iyer and Rohit added 70 runs before Rohit gifted his wicket away to Liam Livingstone. Iyer fell to a silly run out, but Axar and Ravindra Jadeja closed out the game with 33 deliveries to spare.
Earlier in the day, England's batters put on a much-improved show. Joe Root (69) and Ben Duckett (65) scored contrasting fifties, followed by a Liam Livingstone cameo (41). Varun Chakaravarthy, on ODI debut, and Jadeja bowled well, restricting England to 304.
Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers with 3-35, while Harshit Rana and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each. Mohammed Shami conceded 72 runs in his 10 overs.
Brief scores:
- England 304 in 49.5 overs (Joe Root 69, Ben Duckett 65; Ravindra Jadeja 3-35)
- India 308/6 in 44.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 119, Shubman Gill 60; Jamie Overton 2-27)
