Red hot Root puts Paarl in playoffs
Joe Root's 56-ball 78 not out propelled Paarl Royals past Pretoria Capitals by 11 runs, securing their spot in the playoffs. This is the first time Paarl has reached the playoffs in two consecutive years.
Root, a Sheffield native, has been a key contributor to Paarl's success, scoring more half-centuries (3) than any other player in the tournament. His international commitments have limited his participation in franchise T20 tournaments, making him a valuable addition to the team.
In a tournament first, Paarl's all-spin attack was used for the entire innings, with Bjorn Fortuin, Dunith Wellalage, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Nqaba Peter, and Root bowling all 20 overs. Dayyaan Galiem was the only seamer selected, but he did not bowl on the slowest pitch of the competition.
Root's side-arm off-spin has been effective, making him the joint 12th-highest wicket-taker and putting him in eighth place for economy rates. His contributions extend beyond his performance on the field, as he acts as a mentor to the young players.
Paarl will face Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Thursday, but will have to do so without Root, as England expects him in India.
Joe Root, he brings a lot, hey? And he will take a lot with him.
Trevor Penney, Paarl assistant coach.
