Sophie Devine to miss WPL due to break from domestic cricket
RCB all-rounder Sophie Devine will not be available for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) season. She has decided to take a break from domestic cricket, which also means she will miss the Super Smash in New Zealand.
The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement mentioned that Devine made this decision after receiving professional advice, but no specific reason was given. In her most recent Super Smash appearance, Devine took a five-wicket haul for Wellington.
Liz Green, Head of Women's High Performance Development at NZC, emphasized the importance of player well-being: "Player well-being is paramount to us – it takes precedence over everything else… The most important thing for NZC is that Sophie has a decent break, receives good support and care, and is fit and well before returning to professional cricket."
NZC will announce Devine's future playing decision in due course. The 35-year-old all-rounder has played nearly 300 international games, with a highest WPL score of 99 for RCB – the tournament's highest score by any player.
