  • Rishabh Pant, unveiled as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday in Kolkata, is determined to establish himself as a players' skipper.
  • "I will focus on ensuring that our players are comfortable with me and my communication style. I want to keep constant communication with them, as it will be a key part of my captaincy," Pant explained.
  • "I aim to be seen as someone who genuinely cares about the players and strives to bring out the best in them."
  • "The team's philosophy will revolve around a never-say-die attitude. Regardless of the match situation, we will always try to win and see how the match progresses. That will be the mindset."
  • Pant has also expressed satisfaction with the LSG management that have put together a team for the season through auction in Jeddah, in November. "There is a good mix of experience and youth," he remarked.
  • Pant's engagement with the LSG management has revolved around approach as a captain. "So far the conversations have been about the ways to take this team forward. Mostly the thought process is to move ahead. We will have more conversations going forward and closer to the IPL but as for now our approach will be to win."
  • Sanjiv Goenka, the franchise owner, seemed happy with what Pant will bring to the table. "I see Rishabh as a future India captain. I see in him the kind of leadership quality that is strikingly different – there is novelty and uniqueness in both thought and action, the qualities I see in MS Dhoni or Rohit Sharma. I see at least 14-15 more years in his career during which I see at least three-four IPL titles."
  • Goenka splurged a record Rs 27 crore in the IPL auction to acquire Pant but neither the owner nor the player see it as a factor that will impact on the performance. "An important element is every team has spent as much as we have – that is Rs 120 crore. How much the teams have spent on players is a minor detail about the composition and breakdown."
  • "Firstly there is no price tag pressure on the owner, why should there be any pressure on the player. When I took Ben Stokes for Pune, he was then the costliest player. Ben Stokes never thought on those lines. You are performing irrespective.
  • "You are also performing for individual satisfaction, for the sense of achievement. The captain has two roles – one is that of an individual player and more importantly that of a leader. So how he leads is as important as how he performs individually. To me Rishabh is one of the better captains India would have."
  • Pant added, "Personally I don't think about money. I just want to play the game and contribute to the team. That's how I see it."
