Fraser-McGurk Ends Lean Run to Keep Renegades Alive
Jake Fraser-McGurk brought an end to his lean run in the Big Bash League with a spectacular 46-ball 95 to keep Melbourne Renegades' slim hopes alive of finishing in the top four. Josh Brown's belligerent hitting helped set the tone for the chase, racing to 15 off just 5 balls before being caught in the deep for an 11-ball 32.
With a solid base behind them, Renegades were able to kick on and Fraser-McGurk ensured that his side weren't behind. He went on a six-hitting spree, clearing the ropes thrice in four deliveries before adding to Spencer Johnson's woes by smacking him around for a couple of fours and a six. Fraser-McGurk brought up a 24-ball 50 at the halfway mark and put his side firmly in the driver's seat.
A great catch from Matt Renshaw finally ended the youngster's innings, five short of his century but he had done enough damage by then as Fergus O'Neill applied the finishing touches to get the job done with two overs left. Earlier in the day, Heat made a quiet start before Jack Wood exploded against Will Sutherland with a hat-trick of sixes. The Heat openers put on 57 for the opening wicket before Adam Zampa ended Nathan McSweeney's innings.
Heat had momentum heading into the final stages before being forced to start all over again when Callum Stow removed both the set batters in the same over. Daniel Drew stuttered but Tom Alsop smashed some useful boundaries in the end to ensure his side almost put up 200, which was anyway not enough in the end.
