Dhaka club organizers threaten boycott over proposed BCB constitution reforms
Representatives of 67 out of 76 clubs under the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) have expressed their intention to boycott leagues if the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) approves the proposed constitutional amendments. The club representatives have set a deadline of January 17 for their demands to be met, and plan to meet BCB President Faruque Ahmed on January 18 to discuss their concerns.
The key proposals in the revised constitution include the dissolution of the CCDM, a significant reduction in the number of councilors in the BCB General Council, and a decrease in the number of directors representing Dhaka-based clubs from 12 to 4. This would result in a total reduction of BCB directors from 25 to 21.
Club representatives are demanding the resignation of Nazmul Abedin, the primary architect of the proposed amendments, due to alleged irregularities in the draft. They have proposed an increase in the number of representatives from Dhaka clubs to 15 if constitutional amendments are necessary.
Lutfur Rahman, a club representative in the Dhaka Premier League, has emphasized that if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, they will have no choice but to boycott cricket. The proposed changes are seen by many as an attempt to undermine the importance of club cricket in Bangladesh, which has historically been the primary source of livelihood for a majority of cricketers.
The club representatives have threatened to withdraw from all Dhaka-based club cricket, which could jeopardize the future of around 1,600 to 2,000 cricketers.
