Cricket Australia Admits to Error in Border-Gavaskar Trophy Presentation
Sunil Gavaskar was not invited to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the Australian team after their five-Test series win at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Cricket Australia (CA) had invited only Allan Border to make the presentation.
Gavaskar's Reaction
"I was not asked to (make the presentation)," Gavaskar said in a statement to Cricbuzz. "We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both AB and Sunil had been asked to go on stage," CA said in a statement.
CA's Plan
The CA plan was to invite only one of Gavaskar or Border to the presentation ceremony, depending on the series winner. "The plan was that if India won Sunil would present and Allan Border would present to Australia," a CA official said.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy History
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was first instituted during the 1996-97 series in India. Since then, 17 series have been played between the countries, with Australia having a 13-11 edge over India. The first-ever India-Australia series was played in Australia in 1947-48.
