Match Summary
The day's play began with South Africa's openers, Rickelton and Aiden Markram, getting off to a productive start. However, Pakistan's bowlers found some discipline in the second hour, and the opening partnership came to an end when Markram was caught behind. Wiaan Mulder was the next to depart, caught behind off Abbas.
The latter part of the first session saw Pakistan's control lacking, and Aamer Jamal was leaking runs. His replacement, Khurram Shahzad, also conceded a few boundaries as the fourth wicket pair raised a fifty stand in quick time.
Rickelton and Bavuma continued to score at a good rate, displaying a good range of shot-making. Rickelton reached his maiden 150 in Tests, and the duo raised the double century stand. Bavuma entered the 90s and eventually got to his hundred, marking the first instance two batters scoring hundreds on Day 1 of a Test at Newlands since February 2013.
The big stand came to an end late in the day when Bavuma was caught behind, and Rickelton and David Bedingham saw South Africa through to Stumps.
