Australia maintain full control despite Jaiswal's 82
Australia kept a tight grip on the MCG Test as India ended the day at 164/5, still trailing by 310 runs. Scott Boland and Pat Cummins led the Australian bowling attack after Steve Smith scored his 11th Test century against India.
Yashasvi Jaiswal showed determination, scoring 82 runs and displaying good footwork against pacers and handling Nathan Lyon comfortably. Kohli also performed well, managing to let go of balls that tempted him to play, resulting in edges not carrying and pacers bowling straighter at him.
However, both Jaiswal and Kohli were dismissed in the final hour of the day. Jaiswal was run out for 82 after hesitating for a single, and Kohli edged a ball from Scott Boland, who then dismissed nightwatchman Akash Deep, leaving India with five down.
Steve Smith's outstanding century in the morning, along with the top-order's performance on the opening day, extended Australia's dominance. Smith managed to score runs despite having several false shots against Deep. The change bowlers couldn't stop the runs either, with Siraj conceding 30 in his five-over spell.
In response, India's batting was once again disappointing. Rohit Sharma was dismissed early, and KL Rahul followed soon after, clean bowled by Cummins. India lost three wickets for just six runs, giving Australia complete control of the game.
Brief scores: India 164/5 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 82; Pat Cummins 2-57, Scott Boland 2-24) trail Australia 474 (Steve Smith 140, Marnus Labuschagne 72; Jasprit Bumrah 4-99) by 310 runs
