Mitchell Owen's Blistering Ton Powers Hurricanes' Victory
Mitchell Owen scored an unbeaten 101 off 64 balls, hitting nine fours and five sixes, as Hobart Hurricanes secured their first win of the BBL season over Perth Scorchers. After a poor batting performance two days ago, Hurricanes excelled in a chase, thanks to Owen's century and his 101-run stand with Shai Hope.
The carnage began in the first over with a six off Jhye Richardson, followed by 6, 4, 4 off Lance Morris in the third over. Caleb Jewell fell early, but Hurricanes reached the PowerPlay at 44/1, with Owen scoring the majority of the runs. Hope watched from the other end as Owen hit sixes for fun. His fifty came in 31 balls, in the ninth over.
Scorchers failed to break through and made a costly error by not reviewing an LBW call against Owen. They paid the price as he remained unbeaten, seeing the chase through. Even after dismissing Hope, the equation was a manageable 23 off 18. It became 7 off 6 in the final over, where Owen completed his maiden BBL century and sealed the win.
Before Owen's heroics, Riley Meredith's bowling restricted Scorchers to a chaseable total. Meredith finished with figures of 3 for 27 in four overs, including running out Josh Inglis, who top-scored for Scorchers with 49. Ashton Turner's 39 pushed Scorchers past 150, but it wasn't enough in the end.
Scorecard:
Perth Scorchers 155/6 in 20 overs (Josh Inglis 49, Ashton Turner 39; Riley Meredith 3-27)
Hobart Hurricanes 156/2 in 19.2 overs (Mitchell Owen 101*, Shai Hope 38)
Hurricanes won by 8 wickets.
