BCCI to elect new secretary and treasurer by January 12
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will convene a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai during the second week of January to elect a new secretary and treasurer. The meeting is expected to take place on January 12, following the resignations of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar.
The decision to hold the SGM was made during a virtual meeting of the BCCI Apex Council on December 19. The Apex Council approved the convening of the SGM, with the final date and venue to be decided on December 20. As per regulations, a minimum notice period of 21 days is required, making January 11 or 12 the most likely dates for the meeting.
Shah resigned as secretary on November 30 to become the Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC), while Shelar stepped down on December 15 after being inducted into the new Maharashtra government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. As per the BCCI constitution, a minister is ineligible to hold an office-bearer position.
In the interim, BCCI president Roger Binny has delegated the secretary's responsibilities to joint secretary Devjit Saikia. However, no such arrangement has been announced for the treasurer's duties.
The BCCI constitution requires new office-bearers to be elected within 45 days of a vacancy arising. The secretary's position must be filled by January 15, and the SGM date is well within the time limit to address this constitutional requirement.
