ICC bans USA's National Cricket League (NCL)
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided not to sanction the NCL in future editions due to the league's failure to comply with playing eleven requirements. The guidelines stipulate that 7 players affiliated or associated with USA Cricket (USAC) must be fielded, but the NCL featured 6-7 foreign players on multiple occasions.
The NCL attempted to generate interest by engaging cricket legends like Wasim Akram and Vivian Richards as ambassadors and attracting ownership from Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. However, operational inefficiencies and issues on and off the pitch negatively impacted the league. Substandard wickets and potential violations of U.S. immigration laws were reported.
Cost-cutting measures, such as skipping player visa filings, raised concerns due to the absence of a clear revenue model. The ICC plans a complete overhaul of its sanctioning process for T20 and T10 leagues, with the USA leading in applications.
In response to the NCL ban, USAC has chosen not to sanction the US Open T20, a long-standing weekend tournament. The specific reasons for this decision remain unclear but may be part of a larger ICC initiative to raise sanctioning standards worldwide.
