Nahid Rana fifer puts Bangladesh in control
Bangladesh's pace sensation Nahid Rana picked up his maiden five-fer (5-61) in Test match cricket to bundle out West Indies for 146, which allowed the visitors to take a marginal 18-run lead on Day 3 of the second Test. Through Shadman Islam (46) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (42), Bangladesh had scored 193 for 5 by the time Stumps was called, stretching their lead to 211 and putting them firmly in control.
Bangladesh continued with Nahid, who tested the batters on Day 2 consistently. He found lateral movement in his very first over on the third morning as he successfully beat Keacy Carty on the outside edge. He eventually picked up West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who fended at a short delivery but the ball went straight to the gully fielder.
The tourists took advantage of this small opening early in the day and pushed the door ajar. Kavem Hodge was next to depart against the fiery fast-bowler as he nicked at a back-of-a-length delivery to the 'keeper.
Soon thereafter, Alick Athanaze chopped a ball onto his stumps off Taskin Ahmed while Justin Greaves was bowled by Taijul Islam. Hasan Mahmud then got into the act as he trapped the counter-attacking Joshua da Silva LBW, leaving the hosts reeling at 114 for 6. Carty, who watched the carnage unfold from the other end, was strangled down the legside as his 115-ball resistance came to an end. Rana then came back to clean up the tail, with Kemar Roach being his fifth and final scalp of the innings. Apart from the top-three, none of the other West Indies batters managed to reach double-digit scores.
With lateral movement still on offer at the Sabina Park, Jayden Seales got one to angle in and then nip away as Mahmudul Hasan Joy was dismissed for naught. Shahadat Hossain lived dangerously with some close leaves and slices over the fielders heads but punished any sort of width offered by Alzarri Joseph with two consecutive boundaries in the fourth over.
Shadman and Mehidy put on a healthy 70-run stand as the West Indian bowlers started spraying the ball down the wrong line. Mehidy managed to hit Shamar Joseph for four boundaries in an over to get his innings going. At one stage, West Indies had conceded 29 runs in just nine deliveries.
The two batters brought up the 50-run stand in just 29 balls which consisted of 11 boundaries. Runs continued to come at a canter until, against the run of play, both Shadman and Mehidy nicked behind to the 'keeper off Shamar. It was the perfect scenario for Litton Das and Jaker Ali as they found the boundary regularly before the former was bowled by a slower delivery from Greaves. Taijul and Jaker ensured that no further damage was done as Bangladesh are now firmly in the driver's seat.
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 164 and 193/5 (Shadman Islam 46, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 42; Shamar Joseph 2-70) lead West Indies 146 (Keacy Carty 40, Kraigg Brathwaite 39; Nahid Rana 5-61, Hasan Mahmud 2-19) by 211 runs
