Mominul Revamps Technique to Bolster Batting Returns in West Indies
Bangladesh batter Mominul Haque has revamped his technique to bolster his batting returns in the West Indies
Mominul Haque, the joint highest Test run scorer for Bangladesh in 2024, has been working on his technique under the guidance of Sohel Mama, the Bangladesh Tigers head coach. The changes have paid off, with Mominul averaging 36 in the eight Tests he played in 2024, with a strike-rate of 58.94.
New Technique and Mindset
Mominul has changed his grip and batting set-up, which has increased his range of shots and made him more free while playing. He has also worked on his head position, ensuring it remains in a good place regardless of the direction the bowler is coming from.
"I have changed my grip and batting set-up under the guidance of Sohel Mama, and it is paying off," Mominul said. "I was a bit more defensive earlier, but now I am looking for runs most of the time."
Impact on Batting
Mominul's new approach has been evident in his performances, with a century against India being a testament to his reinvented batting. He has also included the sweep and pull in his repertoire, which has helped him reach the three-digit mark.
"You have set the shot mentally, and I never had that in my mind that I will play the sweep especially against Ashwin," Mominul said. "Against spinners, my pattern is playing in the V, and there is no sweep attached to it."
Pressure on Mominul
Bangladesh will be hoping that Mominul clicks in the two-match Test series against the West Indies, as they will be missing the service of seasoned campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim and skipper Najmul Hossain due to injury. The onus lies on Mominul's shoulder, and he needs to step up to guide the tourists to a memorable time in the Caribbean.
