Suryakumar Yadav Hails Tilak Varma's Back-to-Back T20I Hundreds
No. 3 Position Awaits With Captain's Seal of Approval
Tilak Varma, 22, has already experienced the uncertainties and competition within the Indian T20 side, having faced hand injuries that kept him out of action in T20I assignments against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar Yadav Hands Over No. 3 Position to Young Varma
Varma's opportunity to take over the No. 3 spot came in Gqeberha, where he voiced his desire for a promotion to Suryakumar Yadav. The captain relinquished his position with a simple message: "Express yourself." Varma repaid the faith by joining an elite list of just five players to score back-to-back T20I hundreds, the second of which came on a manic night at the Wanderers on Friday.
Suryakumar Seeks Long-Term Success for Varma
Captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed his hopes for Varma's success to translate across formats, even hinting at Virat Kohli, who made the No. 3 spot his own for over a decade in white-ball cricket.
Suryakumar's full quote on Varma's performance: "It was actually running in my mind that there has been a time when one man has batted consistently at No. 3 and done wonders for India, so this was a perfect situation, perfect opportunity for a young guy and definitely someone like him, showing a lot of promise… and we both actually spoke to each other and said, 'I think it's the perfect time for someone like you to bat at number three, take that responsibility, not only now, but going forward as well'.
Key Statistics Highlight India's T20 Transformation
Varma achieved these two hundreds at strike-rates of 191.07 and 255.32 respectively, reinforcing India's refreshed approach to T20 cricket, which has seen them win 24 of the 26 T20Is this year.
Suryakumar's full quote on India's strategies: "Even before the World Cup, we played a few T20 tournaments and we spoke about what brand and what type of cricket we want to play going forward in T20s," Suryakumar said. "So we play IPL, we play for different franchises, but when we come together, I think we wanted to do the same thing, what we do for our franchise and just be on the same page, play a different brand of cricket, what we had been playing before and post T20 World Cup, we just followed the same things what we did there and if it's going really well, why to change?"
Future Selection Calls to Be Made Soon
As India continues to evolve their T20 format, challenges and selection calls await Suryakumar. The captain plans to address these issues when necessary, saying, "I haven't thought about it so far, I like to live in the moment, I will try to enjoy what happened today because it's a special win, a special series win."
