West Indies go 1-0 up in ODI series

West Indies beat England by 8 wickets in rain-hit first ODI

West Indies collected a comfortable 8-wicket victory in the rain-hit first ODI against England in Antigua. The visitors were bowled out for 209 with Gudakesh Motie picking up four wickets, followed by a 94 off 69 balls from Evin Lewis as West Indies secured the win in 25.5 overs.

Evin Lewis' 94 takes West Indies to victory

After a rain delay before the second innings, Lewis got West Indies going in the chase with sixes off John Turner and Jofra Archer. Partnering with Brandon King, Lewis struck three maximums inside the first 10 overs. Once the rain broke, Lewis continued to deal in fours and sixes, taking West Indies past 100. Lewis fell six short of a three-figure score when he found long-off trying to hit Adil Rashid out of the park.

Recap of England's batting collapse

Earlier, top-order English batters failed to capitalize on promising starts, with Jayden Seales accounting for two wickets. A 72-run stand between Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran led England's recovery, but from 165/4 in the 35th over, the team suffered a major collapse. England slipped to 187/8 with a wicket-maiden performance from Gudakesh Motie, who picked up four wickets.

Brief scores: England 209 in 45.1 overs (Liam Livingstone 48, Sam Curran 37; Gudakesh Motie 4-41, Jayden Seales 2-22) lost to West Indies 157/2 in 25.5 overs (Evin Lewis 94, Brandon King 30; Liam Livingstone 1-32) by 8 wickets (DLS method).
